Maintaining Hardwood Floors
Cleaning Tips: Hardwood is possibly the best investment
you can make in a home, but care needs to be exercised when cleaning
hardwood floors. Steam mops are ideal for routine cleaning of
finished hardwood as they don’t use harsh chemicals that
can dull or damage the floor over time. Additionally, steam mops
leave very little water residue. After cleaning, dry the floor
to remove any residual water and to buff it to a high shine.
You
may want to clean periodically with a special hardwood floor
cleaner. Make sure to understand the type of floor you have
and which cleaner is right for your floor. Also, be cautious
of recently
uncovered hardwood floors. You may need to do some detective
work to determine how to maintain or strip and refinish older
neglected hardwood flooring.
Maintenance Tips: Follow these
tips to keep your hardwood floors in top shape.
- Hardwood
floors can fade in the sunlight, so it’s
a good idea to move furniture and rugs around periodically.
- Protect
the bottoms of furniture and appliances to keep from
scratching the finish.
- Use rugs in high traffic areas, especially
at entrances. Shake out or vacuum these rugs regularly.
- Keep
pet nails trimmed to minimize scratching.
- Vacuum, sweep or
dust mop hardwood floors frequently to remove grit that can
cause scratching.
- Never use a beater attachment when vacuuming.
- Maintain 30-50%
relative humidity in your home to minimize cracks between
the floorboards.
